Ginori
Antique Small Milk Pitcher or Jug
Hand Painted Blue Flowers, Gold Trim (c. 1880s)
This listing is for a very pretty small pitcher (or large creamer, aka a milk jug) that has a green mark for "Ginori." Ginori, of course, is the noted Italian maker of fine china and porcelain since 1735. I believe this is an older piece, probably 19th century, since the mark is simply Ginori (the Ginori Company merged with the S.C. Richard Company in about 1896 to form Richard-Ginori, the "Ferrari of Porcelain").
The nicely shaped pitcher is decorated with hand-painted blue flowers and buds, with green leaves, and a very smart (albeit bit worn) design of hand-painted gold stems and small leaves. There is also very faint signs of gold trim around the rim and on the handle, but this part of the gold is almost entirely worn away. Particularly nice is the banded bottom part of the pitcher, giving it a very elegant shape. The piece measures 5-3/8 inches high at the top of the arched handle, 5 inches from handle edge to tip of spout, 4-1/8 inches wide near the rounded middle, and 2-5/8 inches wide across the foot ring.
This antique piece is in very good condition, with no chips, cracks, or crazing (obviously attesting to the quality of Ginori pieces). The gold is extremely worn on the rim and handle, as noted, but is more intact on the floral designs. There appear to be some dark spots on the inside bottom edges, which I think are original to manufacture (they don't easily wash away).
The bottom has a green mark for "Ginori" with letters that look like CJ or CF. There is also an impressed number 319 and a hand-written number 2201. Of special interest is the lack of any country mark for Italy, indicating this was perhaps made before the McKinley Tariff Act of 1891.
