After months of hunting the man-eating lions, Patterson was able to track and kill the first lion on December 9, 1898. Two weeks later he was able to kill the second lion, narrowly escaping his own death when the wounded lion charged him. Each lion was over nine feet long and required at least eight men to carry it to the camp. The locals thought of Patterson as a hero and presented him with a silver bowl in gratitude. J.H.
