Answer (1 of 9): Romex is a brand name. The proper name is non-metallic cable, or “NM” on the grade marking. It is fairly waterproof in fact, but it isn’t rated for that, and some of it may deteriorate in UV light from the sun. If you want stuff designed for outdoors, use “UF” or “direct burial”
