Every barista needs a great tamping mat - to help keep their workspace clean and tide as well as protect their countertops and equipment from damage.We've had this Shades of Coffee designed and branded black silicone rubber tamping mat specifically manufactured to our specifications. It's largely based on a similar tamping mat that MrShades has been using for many years, though we've made a few adjustments to this to improve ergonomics and appearance when used with a Gaggia Classic.It's manufactured from thick silicone rubber, and is matt black in appearance - with a discrete Shades of Coffee logo along the upper edge. It has rounded rear corners and a small rounded ridge around the outer perimeter along three sides, to help prevent stray coffee grinds venturing too far across your counter, bench or worktop.There's an L shaped front, which allows the mat to locate comfortably on the corner or edge of your countertop and this helps to prevent the mat from 'wandering' as well as helping to protect the edge of your countertop when positioning a portafilter and tamping. As the front of the mat is flat, with no rounded lip, this works particularly well with a bottomless portafilter.Uniquely amongst any similar tamping mats, and as can be seen in the photo gallery, our mat is the same width as a Gaggia Classic. This improves both ergonomics and aesthetics.The specifications of the mat are:Constructed from matt black food grade silicone - much nicer and much softer than rubber200mm wide (the same as the front of a Gaggia Classic)150mm deepfront lip is 37mm deep externally and 30mm deep internally and approximately 7mm thick.It weighs approximately 230g.
